Description

Mobil Glygoyle HE220 gear oil helps reduce unscheduled downtime

Situation
An Egyptian steel plant operates a Bar Mill 1 cooling bed equipped with reducer worm gearboxes. Lubricated with a conventional mineral oil, the gearboxes were experiencing severe pitting in some of the wheel gear teeth, causing breakdowns to occur after just 1.25 years of operation. In an effort to reduce unscheduled downtime, the plant reached out to ExxonMobil engineers to identify a lubricant solution that could help improve equipment reliability.

Recommendation
ExxonMobil engineers recommended the plant switch to Mobil Glygoyle HE220, a high performance gear oil designed to provide excellent EP/antiwear protection for equipment components and high level of micropitting protection for sensitive gear systems.

Result
After transitioning to Mobil Glygoyle 220, the plant was able to reduce the operating temperature of its worm gearboxes by 25°C (77° F). This has helped extend worm gearbox life from 1.25 years to 10 years and reduce equipment downtime to deliver a company-estimated savings of US $77,600. The company also reports that Mobil Glygoyle 220 gear oil also increased productivity by 2,000 tons annually.
